The less time you spend searching for a company that has a particular product or service, and then searching out another company that offers another product or service you require, the more time you have to spend on tasks that will enhance and grow your business or, in an individuals case, free up time to pursue those things that will enhance the quality of your life, and your families life. You in turn will feel, and see an increase in your "happiness level", as well as the happiness level of your entire family.
Many times on the surface, it seemed as though I was acting in a manner that would be considered cost efficient or effective by shopping around for various product and services. Many times we must or should do this. Yet there are those times we need to carefully analyze the particular situation.
I decided one year to take a look at all the vender's I used. Yes, we should all do this by default, and frequently, but I took a different approach and dug a little deeper.
I realized, and you do not have to have a large business for this to happen, but I realized in my pursuit of getting the best price for goods and services, that I had built up a large group of vender's and service providers. Many, after careful review, carried products that I purchased elsewhere. I decided to really analyze this situation thoroughly.
I realized that while I was enjoying a great price on a product with one vendor, they were in fact higher in price on another item I required, and they carried, which I bought for less from another vendor. More than likely you are in a niche market of sorts or may even specialize as I did. In situations such as this you will frequently buy goods and services closely related. As stated I had really built up a very large group of vender's that I used frequently.
I looked at everything, and from every angel I could think of. What happen in the end was this. I would determine my best vendor of a particular item and would then check to see if this vendor carried items I was purchasing elsewhere. If so, and If I was getting the item cheaper where I currently obtained it, I would try and negotiate the price down or at least try and get the vendor to match what I was paying the other vendor in order to scale back the amount of overall vendors I was dealing with. Many times the vendor was happy to match the price I had been paying, in order to garner more of my business, but as we all know in business there is always that time we simply for whatever reason cannot lower the price or match a competitors price.
I would then take a look at how much time would be saved dealing with one less vendor. The time adds up. All the small tasks like paying invoices and having to make that extra call or have that extra meeting can very easily total up to a very significant amount of time, a whole lot of time if you have a lot of vendors and situations like I described. Time is money. We hear that all the time, and it is true, and always will be.
My solution in many cases was to go ahead and pay the higher price for a particular product or service due to the savings I was receiving on other products from this vendor. Then I was able to rid myself of a vendor all together. Careful analysis proved correct. I continued to enjoy my savings on the one product from my vendor, but had acquired additional cost on another product that this one vender was now supplying also.
After a reasonable amount of time, I was able to see very clearly that this was an excellent decision. The amount of time that was being saved from not having to deal with another vender really surpassed my initial expectations. Scheduling, paying invoices, dealing with back orders, and returns. We all have those and it can become arduous. Dealing with one person or company makes these tasks far easier, and scheduling becomes easier. As it turned out, we added a few other products this vender began to distribute, and being that his, the vendors gross revenues were heavily increased, we were able to enjoy an increased discount, which in turn placed us back to the price we had been getting from the extra vendor. We certainly realized a measurable increase to our profit margin. Over time I analyzed all of the vendors. We found several instances that we could take similar actions. Most were not as significant as the one described, but a penny added to the bottom line, along with having to deal with fewer people is definitely a swing in the right direction of our metrics.
This is certainly the type of savings you want as well. You can kick a hefty amount to the bottom line. Straight to the bottom line, and that is the kind you like.

You will learn that if you raise the bar, raise your standards to levels that exceed your competitors, and maintain it, and retain quality individuals that consistently deliver a superior product than that of your competitors. It soon becomes the culture in your business. You will notice the employees are taking greater pride in their work. A healthy air of competitiveness develops, and moral heightens.
My competitors would just get beside themselves over my pricing or under bidding them, and the amount I payed my staff. It was simple logic. Obtain, and retain the very best. Drop your profit margin from say 35 percent to 25 percent, and the action begins, and begins fast. Clients realize you produce a superior product, and they absolutely notice you are 10 percent lower in cost. Needless to say, we never experienced any down time. We could easily by March become booked up until fall. People will wait on you when they know your going to deliver to them a fine product, and people do talk. We had no advertising budget, none. Our clients took care of that for us. Word of mouth. There is no better. Before I hop off of my soap box, I must say this. Those very same competitors that felt I was nuts. Well, they are still out there doing the same thing. I retired or semi-retired at 44. Only for a short time. Time to tend to a few personal goals and develop my dream, and here I am. A company, and I will not use the name, but they are big in the area of Domain Names. You could purchase a dot .com for $6.99. That is your initial cost. Now privacy for the Domain is extra. We are dealing with Domain Name price only here. So the initial cost is $6.99 for the Domain Name. Sounds great, wonderful compared to our at the time $11.70. However, what you find is that once you go to re-register that Name with the company I am using for example, it then, and thereafter will cost you $14.99. It may go up as prices do occasionally, but you will not receive the huge discount you were granted to start.
For most buying a Domain Name is a long term commitment. Do the math yourself. IN the long run our consistent price of $11.70 comes out significantly cheaper. I tend to look at what the company practices as a form of bait and switch, not really, but it is similar. We offer a discount on Domain Names, but that is with the purchase of hosting as well, and at the time we are speaking of our Domain Name cost with any hosting, it matters not the plan, our discount Domain Name price was $8.40. As long as you retain your hosting you continue to get the discounted Domain Name price with us. If you drop the hosting then of-course you pay the full price of $11.70.
Simple math reveals that using a five year model and you re-register every year which most do, but similar results are rendered for long term registration as well. Let's use the norm. A person who uses the Domain Name for Five years. Let's call the company we are speaking of competitor. Over a five year time frame with competitor the math is as follows: Year 1 = $6.99, year 2 = $14.99, year 3 = $14.99, year 4 = $14.99, and year 5 = $14.99, Grand Total spent in 5 years is $66.95. Let's look at our cost or our math. Simple, 5 x $11.70 = Grand Total Spent $58.50. Just for Domain name you saved $8.45 with us. That is not a fortune, but my appreciation for money saved is significant.
